so i used to work at a level 1 trauma center in my home town and it was regional so we would get stuff from a 50 mile radius, which is a lot of square miles... if i were a math genius i would be able to tell you exactly how many miles that is, but i'm not... we have a helicopter based there and everything... every time a trauma is coming in, a trauma alert is announced and if it is a particularly bad trauma, a code red is announced... now remember this is a fully functioning OR doing scheduled surgeries and these traumas and code reds are thrown in as extra emergencies just to shake things up...
this particular day the code red was announced and so we speed off to the code red OR and open all the instruments and supplies and set up as if we are going to do surgery... just because a code red is announced, doesn't mean we will ever need to do the emergency surgery... every case is different... anyway... they come running through the doors with a female patient who has apparently tried to commit suicide by cutting off her left hand... she managed to cut all the way through to the other side of her wrist and her hand was hanging on by about an inch worth of skin and tissue... why didn't she cut it completely off? somebody found her before she could finish the job... she didn't care... she told us to 'just cut it off'... that's not even the best part... the best part is she originally tried to cut her left leg off using a butcher knife... she managed to saw an INCH into her left shin bone before giving up because it was too hard... she felt nothing... no pain at all... i don't see too many crazy people in my job, this one was nutz... the end
